The 'Dojo' - Where we learn Aikido
When you first come into the DOJO you must bow towards the KAMIZA, (you also do this when leaving). Once you are ready you then kneel on the TATAMI facing the KAMIZA waiting for the SENSEI. Once everyone is kneeling and ready the SENSEI claps their hands and everyone bows towards the KAMIZA. As you bow you say KONNICHIWA (hello). The SENSEI will turn and bow to the students as you bow you say ONEGAISHIMASU (please teach). When the session has ended we bow to SENSEI and say DOMO ARIGATO GOZAIMASU (thank you very much). We then all bow to picture of O SENSEI and say DOMO ARIGATO GOZIAMASU. When we bow in Aikido it is to show respect to the teacher and to other Aikidoka’s. Remember to bow to your partner before & after each technique.
